Chapter 3

Beth was all I could think about. Sure, she had every right to be pissed at me, but couldn't she just forgive and forget? Well, obviously not. I hadn't prepared myself well enough for her coming back.

The next day at school was even worse. I mean, she was so close, yet still so far away. I watched her so much, I wanted to go up to her and tell her how much I really loved her and how much that I was sorry. But I couldn't. She was ignoring me as much as possible.

Now that I think back about it, this whole thing wasn't entirely my fault. Jenn Limway had come over to tell me that Beth was moving away. I never did figure out how she knew because she and Beth were never really close friends. But she told me that Beth was moving away and wanted to break up with me. I was in complete shock because we did have all of those plans to get married as soon as we were both 18. And I did want to marry her. I loved her so much.

Then Jenn leaned forward and just kissed me. It was only that one kiss too. That's when Beth saw us. I felt so bad about it, too. The look on her face, her tears rolling down her cheeks, then dropping to the floor of the treehouse, I almost started crying, too. And when I caught up with her in the yard, I pretended that I didn't like her anymore! What kind of fool was I? A really big one, that's for sure.

"Hey Tay - phone." Ike said, leaning into the doorway of our room, tossing me a portable phone. I waited until he was out of hearing distance before I took the person off of hold.

"Hello?" I asked. There was a brief silence

"You wanted to talk to me yesterday, but I never gave you a chance and it has been bothering me ever since, so what did you want?" Beth asked, a sound of hatred hinted in her voice.

"I need to apologize." I said, searching for the best choice of words.

"For what, Tay? I mean, the damage has already been done. We're talking permanate damage. It's too late for repairs." Beth said.

"Is it?" I asked.

"I didn't call you for you to question me. It's obvious that you aren't going to supply the answers. This is the last time that I am going to say this, Tay. Good bye."

"Beth wait! Don't hang up!" I pleaded. I waited to hear the click and then have dial tone ringing in my ear. But there wasn't.

"Give me one good reason not to hang up."

"Because Beth. Don't you understand? I'm sorry about what happened. It was really stupid. But you just have to believe me when I say that I'm truly sorry. I never wanted to hurt you the way that I did. When Jenn told me that you were moving, I thought that my whole world was going to collapse. Beth, my feelings for you never changed or left."
